JEFFREY SMITH: Digging in the dirt with the people from Minnesota's Iron Range and finding the stories waiting to be told

JEFFREY SMITH is the author of the historical fiction novel Mesabi Pioneers. Jeffrey spent his early years out west - in New Mexico and California - and then made his way to Austin where he earned his English degree at the University of Texas in 1995. Several years later, he moved to the east coast where he met his wife … all the while working on honing his writing skills. His fiction has appeared in The Cynic Online Magazine, Every Day Fiction, Halfway Down the Stairs, and eFiction Magazine.  In 2011, he began a collaborative effort to tell the story of how a remote forested area of Minnesota became America’s greatest source of iron ore just before the dawn of the 20th century. Mesabi Pioneers, published in 2014, is a historical fiction account that follows European immigrants and American businessmen as they rush to turn earth into metal.
